Creating economically successful business cases

Overview
Aim: To support local authorities, combined local authorities, project developers or community groups interested in what makes clean heat neighbourhoods more likely to be economically successful.
Why this is important: Currently, a number of projects suffer from fragile business cases that make accessing finance more challenging. Given local authorities’ limited budgets, it is important to consider what factors might make a project more challenging to set up.
This page is under development and will be released in April 2026, using the findings obtained through a project Nesta has been delivering to explore the economic underpinnings and challenges of setting up area-based clean heat projects. We will be seeking feedback on our proposed solutions.
